What to Do When Current Employees See Your Job Advert
Once you’ve published your job, don’t be surprised if your current employees see it. This usually occurs when they are looking for a new job themselves!
Three issues might arise:
- You’re paying a new entrant more than current staff: If one staff member finds out they’re being underpaid, expect everyone in the team to know. This is a significant political issue, and I’d encourage you to resolve their underlying low pay because employee retention is better than recruitment.
- They think you’re replacing them: I recently worked with a manufacturing company with three sales managers for four divisions, so they wanted to recruit an additional sales manager. When the role was advertised, one sales manager thought he was being replaced, and it took a lot of time and energy to resolve the situation. Pre-empt this potential issue by reassuring them they aren’t being replaced.
- You are replacing them: It should never surprise anyone that they’re losing their jobs. Please read my advice about how to manage employee dismissals properly.
If an employee approaches you in an accusatory manner, I typically respond in a similar manner asking, “Why are you looking at job adverts?” You now have a few moments to think of a good excuse if you’re unprepared. After this conversation, be aware that they’ve quasi-resigned, and you may want to consider looking for a replacement.
